Master your Quest: the official guides that matter
Most bumps when starting out with RunLine are not app problems, they are Quest basics. Here are the best official Meta guides, sorted by situation. Meta's help pages detect your language automatically.
New to the Quest?
Headset fresh out of the box, or unused for a while? These starters get you into the system in minutes.
- Getting started with your Quest GuideMeta Help Center overview for all models
- Set up your Quest step by step GuideThe most complete walkthrough incl. pairing the phone app. Written for the Quest 3S, applies equally to the Quest 3
- Official support videos (English) Playlist67 short how-to videos from the Meta Quest channel

New hall or training field?
RunLine places the course on your real floor. For that, the Quest needs to know the space: in a new environment it asks for a new boundary and rescans the room. That is normal and takes about a minute. Setup tips: stand in the middle, look around the whole space once, keep the light even and avoid direct sun.
- Set up your boundary GuideStationary (1×1 m) or roomscale (2×2 m and up), incl. all boundary settings
- Boundary keeps asking again? GuideWhy that happens and how to avoid it
- Automatic room scan GuideSuggested boundary and assisted space setup on Quest 3 and 3S
- How headset tracking works GuideWhy good lighting is essential
- Passthrough: see your real surroundings GuideIncl. the double-tap on the side of the headset to toggle quickly
Course floating or sunk into the ground? The quickest fix is right in RunLine: open the hand menu, press the “Floor” button in the Placement group and drag the course to match the real floor. Alternatively system-wide on the Quest: Settings, Environment setup, Boundary, Set floor level (touch the real floor with your controller; exact wording may vary between software versions). A wrong floor height is also the most common reason the course seems to “drift” while you walk.
“I can't see my hands”
RunLine is operated entirely with your hands, no controllers needed in the app. The most common reason hands do not appear: the controllers are still active.
- Put both controllers down, for example on a table. Not in your trouser pocket: every movement wakes them up again and the headset stays in controller mode.
- Wait a few seconds and hold your hands in front of your body, in view of the headset.
- Want it right away? Gently tap the sides of the two controllers together twice. That switches straight to hand control.
- Still nothing? Check that hand tracking is enabled (link below) and make sure the room is brightly and evenly lit.
Learn the hand controls
Three gestures operate the whole system:
- Point and pinch: point at an element, then briefly tap thumb and index finger together. That is your click.
- Pinch, hold and drag: scroll and move things.
- Look at your palm and pinch: opens the menu. Hold the pinch until the icon fills up.
- Gesture overview with short demo clips GuideThe table is collapsed: tap the plus next to “Hand tracking gestures”
- Direct Touch: tap, type, grab windows GuideOperate menus directly with your fingers
- First Hand: free practice app by Meta AppA playful way to learn hand controls
View drifted off? Reset it without controllers: palm pinch, then open Quick settings and choose “Reset view”.
Take photos and videos
Capture course setups or show others your course. Quest 3 and 3S record your real surroundings too, so the video shows the course just as you see it through the headset.
- Take a photo GuideVia the Camera app or a button shortcut
- Record a video GuideStart and stop recording, where files are stored
- Get captures onto your phone GuideGallery sync in the Meta Horizon app. Videos longer than one minute must be synced individually
- Transfer via USB to your PC GuideFolders “VideoShots” and “Screenshots” in File Explorer
Capture without controllers: in Settings under Movement tracking, Hand tracking, enable “Expanded Quick Actions”. The palm menu then gets its own buttons for photo and video. Details in the Meta blog post on the v62 update.
Watch along live (casting)
When you are coaching someone, it helps enormously to see what is happening inside the headset. The view can be streamed live to a phone. Requirements: headset and phone on the same Wi-Fi, same Meta account on both.
Wi-Fi at the venue
RunLine needs internet briefly for sign-in and course sync. At unfamiliar venues your own phone hotspot is often the easiest option: Meta officially recommends it as a fallback network. Guest Wi-Fi with a login page (hotels, clubs) frequently does not work.
Sun and care
Sunlight destroys the display. The lenses inside the headset (the glass you look through, not the outer camera lenses) focus sunlight like a magnifying glass: direct sun burns permanent marks into the display in under a minute, even near a window and even when the headset is off. For outdoor training: never put the headset down in the sun, carry it in a case or bag, and keep the eye side turned away from the sun.
- Avoid sunlight damage GuideThe official warning with all details
- Protect and store your headset GuideAlso important: avoid heat, never leave it in the car
- Clean lenses and padding GuideMicrofibre cloth only, no alcohol, no cleaning agents
- Look after the battery GuideCharging, storage, battery saver
- Safety and warranty guide PDFOfficial downloads in several languages
Good to know: Meta officially does not recommend outdoor use. The approved range is 0 to 35°C, and harsh light can disturb tracking. Plenty still works fine outdoors. Plan shade for breaks and never leave the headset lying in the sun.
